“Anne can feel the acid churning in her stomach and creeping up her throat; her head is swimming.”
― Shari Lapena, The Couple Next Door
This book was the first book I have picked up by the Author Shari Lapena and let me tell you it was thrilling, addictive and shocking. Honestly my brain is still catching up.
The book is written in a third person narrative which I enjoyed because we get to understand much more of what lead all the characters to their breaking points.
The story is about a couple Anne and Marco whom have a 6-month baby. Anne is battling with Postpartum Depression and her husband is having financial troubles although she is unaware of this. The action starts almost immediately. It takes place an evening when their baby-sitter cancelled last minute and they had plans to have dinner with their next door neighbors and it was too late to cancel. So they make the decision to leave their baby Cora alone sleeping in her crib if they check on her every 30 minutes and have the baby monitor on. They both over drink and return home well after midnight. When they get to the crib, Baby Cora is gone. She has been kidnapped but by who and why?
We soon discover that Anne's family has money is the motive money or was it a random baby kidnapping?
There are many theories....
Did Anne do it while having an episode of memory loss?
Did Marco money?
Was it Cynthia simply because she didn't like children?
Was someone aware of the wealth of Anne's family?
Rasbach the detective has his own theories and he makes it known to both Anne and Marco. He thinks it was them.
BUTTTTT....was it them? This book keeps you guessing and thinking the entire time and just when you think you've figured it out let me tell you,YOU HAVEN'T. Why do I say that ? I say that because literally even when I you think you know and you are reading it, you keep getting details that complete the picture. There is murder, greed, cheating, theft and so much more in this book that will keep you guessing until the very last page. LITERALLY.
Although I really enjoyed this book I felt like there were parts of the story that left me wanting more and there were also parts that were over-extended. There were characters I wish I knew more about for example, Cynthia and her husband and the secrets they held. Rasbach, the detective seems like a compelling character because he seems like he has good instincts but we don't learn much about him. I did read somewhere that Shari Lapena may be bringing him back in another book , so that seems intriguing. Some of the secrets that are exposed seem like they needed more explanation or more detail.
This is a quick and great read. If you love thrillers I recommend picking this up. You will not regret it. I am going to start reading Shari Lapena's other thriller A Stranger in the House and I cannot wait. Check back for that review. Thanks for reading.
